After chasing roles in the likes of Lionsgate’s “Hunger Games” and Fox’s “Chronicle,” Hollywood’s rising stars have a fresh target: Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. co-production “The Seventh Son.”
Formerly known as “The Spook’s Apprentice,” the fantasy tale is adapted from Joseph Delaney’s young adult series about a 13-year-old who’s the seventh son of a seventh son and learns about wizardry from a forbidding spook.
Up for grabs are the lead roles of Tom and Alice, with helmer Sergei Bodrov conducting screen tests this week to assess the chemistry between various contenders. Thesps expected to test for Tom include Sam Claflin, Caleb Landry-Jones and James Frecheville. Imogen Poots, Felicity Jones, Alicia Vikander, Gabrielle Wild and Dianna Agron will test for the role of Alice.
Jeff Bridges is in negotiations to play the key role of the Spook, aka Master Gregory, and Julianne Moore is nearing a deal to play a witch. Testing for the parts of Tom and Alice had been postponed so rewrites could be done to help lock in Bridges.
Alex Pettyfer and Jennifer Lawrence had also shown interest in the project, but have since moved on.
Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk is producing with Lionel Wigram and Legendary’s Thomas Tull. Former Legendary executive Alysia Cotter and Jon Jashni are exec producing.
Pic has been in development since 2005, but has gained momentum since Bodrov came on last year to helm.
Though no deals have yet been set, the plan is to still shoot the film sometime late this summer.
